Not related to baking, but...Kittens!

I have a lot of posts coming up, but first I have to show you all the new additions to my family:
Moses and Cleopatra! Cleo's the one with short hair, and Moses is my baby boy on the left. They're siblings but they have very different personalities--both adorable and very sweet. Especially when they meow, oh my god, these babies are too much. They're 9-10 weeks right now, and a few days ago we gave them free rein of the house. Our older kitty Nori doesn't like them too much yet, and they're terrified of our dog, Marco, but they're doing great and having fun! Definitely a huge distraction from what I should be doing day-to-day.

New Blogger Shoutout...

I know pretty much the only people who look at my blog are my friends who are mostly just hungry, but if any of you are interested in checking out different kinds of blogs, my friend Kerri just started Kerri's Claws, where she plans on blogging everything beauty related (mainly nail polish). She's pretty much pro at nail painting, so if you're interested, check it out! She only has an introductory post up so far but I encourage anyone interested to follow it--I'm sure she'll be posting cool stuff soon!

A few summers ago, she even water marbled my nails:

I'm Back! (Kind of)

I think it's been easier to post on my blog since I'm back at college. I don't know why, maybe because even though the internet is pretty bad, it's better than in my room at home? So uploading pictures takes a shorter time? Not sure, but I think my posts will be a little more simpler from now on--definitely using a lot of recipes from cookbooks that I would rather you buy than me post online, but I can show you the results!

Anyway, I'll probably be posting about once a week, but look forward to some new stuff!

Hiatus

I suppose it's about time I actually declare that I'm taking a break from blogging. I did have a few more things I could share on here, but I've just been tired of taking the time to upload pictures, write about them, and share the recipes. Hopefully I'll bake more and be more excited to post here again soon!

Waffle Frolic

I'm happy to say that I'm finally DONE with this last week before my 4-day weekend...it was a long, long, longgg week. So I don't have a new recipe as promised, but tomorrow I'm planning on testing my oven to see if it really DOES work or if it is indeed broken, so there will be new food on Tuesday!

Instead I'll post pictures of this yummyyy waffle place I went with some friends last night, Waffle Frolic. Gooood waffles. I'd been wanting waffles for a while, haha. Although it might have been a little pricey considering hey, you know, they're waffles, and the toppings aren't that extraordinary, I thought it was worth it (since I don't have a waffle maker and access to these toppings would give me more than what I want for a larger price...if that makes sense). So basically at Waffle Frolic, you go in and choose your type of waffle and then order ingredients separately in any combination you could want.

The waffles above are my friend Marrisa's waffles, with lemon curd and pumpkin butter and I'm not sure what else. I should have tried at least one of those two things, they sound so good...

So the above waffles are what I got, with blueberry yogurt (made in the restaurant, apparently) and strawberries. Yumm I love strawberries. I was really tempted to get whipped cream but I really, really like yogurt.

I'm posting this one last cuz it's most impressive, haha. These are David's waffles, with I guess strawberries, chocolate? and whipped cream...man waffles are so good.

Leftover Frosting Sandwiches

While I was making the three-layer, chocolate frosting version of Dorie Greenspan's Perfect Party Cake recipe, I ended up having a lot more extra frosting than I'd have liked. Luckily for me, my mom's friend Darcee was visiting and suggested I put the extra frosting between two graham crackers and refridgerate or freeze them, kind of like frosting sandwiches--well, exactly like them.

Anyway, I decided it was a good idea and tried it out.

Oh my god, using this recipe for frosting made them taste exactly like ice cream sandwiches. I frequently end up with too much frosting, so this is a great idea so as not to waste it!

Baking in the Dorm Kitchen

Wow. Sooo. Here's where I got to bake these past two semesters.

Baking in a college dorm has its ups and downs. One, people come by and compliment the smell, tell you it looks good, etc. On the other hand, they make you feel bad for not offering them cake or cookies, and sometimes you want to keep it a secret from your friends so you can surprise them but really can't because as soon as they smell something baking they come to check what's up. Two, it's a cute kitchen and the appliances work just great. But it's a little too tiny and cramped: hard to work with other people trying to use the stove or microwave, wash their dishes, and of course there are always the people who just kinda stand there watching you when you really want to invest in some quality time baking alone. Three, if I don't have a fork or bowl on hand and need one fast, usually people have them left around (note: none of those bowls, cups, peanut butter jar, etc are mine) that you can grab and use. Unfortunately, usually they're not clean. In fact, the sink is usually full of dirty dishes that make it impossible for you to wash your own dishes and clean up after baking. Why can't people clean up after themselves? Argh. But it's fine.

Next year I'm getting an apartment with my friend Lucy, and that should be better because we picked an apartment with a bigger kitchen. Just for me. Yay!

Plus, I'll get a bigger fridge. Look at what I've had to use this year (since I definitely don't like risking putting things in the public fridge):

Oh yeah, not to mention, all my room-temperature ingredients were stored between an armchair and my friends' fridge in our common room...
